You shook me all night long, by Axl*
I want to make a few quick comments recent developments in the local (Sri Lankan) blogosphere (kottu & zsri).
Technically, this post should be in SriPost, but I make an effort to keep Sripost neutral. So, um, it’s here.
Sri Lanka’s best blog?
I think Janindra has one of Sri Lanka’s best (if not the best) blog(s). His posts so far, are interesting, relevant to Sri Lanka, and full of original content. So, here’s to you Janindra!
Other cool blogs I follow include:
Moju (www.moju.lk)
Mahangu.org
Yo’s blog (Mahamoor.com)
Charith.NET
No Comments?
Mahangu has turned off comments on his blog. I think this is a pity. By it’s very definition a blog is a place where an author writes posts, and visitors comment and interact. By turning this feature off, both author, and visitors loose.
However, as Mahangu points out, it’s his place, besides, I’m sure he has a good reason.. I’m curious to know what other people make of this “Turning off comments” idea..
In Sri Lanka, the consumer IS a moron
The author of this post appears to take offense at the level of stupidity displayed in Sri Lankan ads.
Well there is a reason that these advertiesments appear to be ‘designed’ for morons.
BECAUSE, IN SRI LANKA, THE typical CONSUMER IS a MORON.
Ask any executive at a local advertising company why their ads are so stupid, and they will tell you that “that’s the only thing the consumer responds to: simple almost moronic ads which make no sense to intelligent people” The first order of business at our local ad companies is, forget everything you learned at university, and write mindless garbage that no sane person would take seriously.

Thanks Sumna ! You are a blogging icon and I’ve followed your blogs for a very long time. About mahangus - I think I know why he may have turned off his comments. I was a bit cheeky and in his Jack and horse posting made a comment about jacking off a horse…. and gloves. It was of course a bit of word play but he was well within his rights to do what he did, and I really should give him an apology.

Honestly, the main reason for the comments being turned off is that I wanted to spend less time sifting comments and more time actually writing. Of course, I just might open them for posts where I need reader feedback etc. I just found I was spending too much time trying to keep the discussion on-topic and relevant.
I just sort of needed a break, and Janindra’s horse comment, though funny, sort of gave me the heads up I needed.
No hard feelings though, I know it was wordplay, and done in good fun.
Also like I’ve said, my contact form is always open.

(http://llibertarian.blogspot.com/)we had a discussion on this before, as you can see here and here

For me, I can not open live comments. I get too many sh*t everyday for bashing politicians and our LTTE terra’s.. I have said clearly that I am frustrated with our politico’s and this is the way how I take it out..

mahangu is, undisputedly, one of the smartest and oldest bloggers on kottu. i’m not saying that because the boy is my friend, i’m saying that because as a writer, and a blogger, he has been a huge inspiration to me, right from the start. the point of that statement was to imply that, hence, he isn’t going to be making any rash decisions that aren’t thought out and re-thought out regarding his blog. simply because he is not a novice and knows what he is doing.
i think he explained himself clearly enough on his blog post, and mahangu, you don’t have to keep justifying your actions like you’ve done here on this thread of comments. he made a decision to close comments on his blog, and since we’re talking about definitions, i might as well add, although fully aware that everyone here must already know this, HIS blog is HIS space and if he needed people to tell him what to do with what he writes…then he’d be writing for a newspaper or something. the whole point of a blog is that you are the exclusive owner of it and what you do with it is solely up to you. and technically, your readers should have the intellectual depth to understand this, whether you explain yourself or not.
if you really have something to say to him, you can send him an email, and like he said, repeatedly, his contact form is still around.
this is getting stale, people. mahangu made a very carefully contemplated decision to close comments on his blog and that’s really no one else’s business.

Strange, there are comments showing up on Padashow, attributed to me, which weren’t even made by me..
Guess there is a ghost in the machine after all…

to regurgitate one of arguments used in the threads i linked earlier, it’s not about blogger’s freedom(of which there is no dispute) but attitude.
(http://llibertarian.blogspot.com/)internet is what it is today because it is based on tolerance, freedom of speech, and acceptance of divergent views and technologies.
