The ubergeeks at Tomshardware have figured out how to run a dual core Pentium D 805 clocked at 2.66 Ghz, at a whopping 4.1 GHZ! Yoikes. Is this the new Celeron 300?

[Ed. some clarifications may be necessary for ordinary (normal) people…]

  1. Overclocking: The art of running parts of your PC, preferrably the CPU, faster than original manufacture specifications.
  2. Why? - Overclocking started because computers were really slow, but these days we have fast systems so it isn’t that necessary always, but hey, It’s fun, and beating a £600 cpu with a £79 CPU is enough to make most die hard techies smile.. it’s that “I converted my lada into a Ferrari feeling” Also those who are into rendering/3D/Games can never have enough speed.
  3. The celeron 300 was famous for being crazily overclockable. This processor appears to match or beat that celeron’s capabilities, as far as overclocking goes..
  4. Note: These results were achieved using a really high quality motherboard, water cooling, and the best memory/psu/etc money could buy. Don’t expect to rush out to unity plaza and achieve the same results

Ed: the best overclock I’ve ever achieved was running a 1.5Ghz wilamette at 2.0, with normal air cooling. I bet I could have achieved better results if I was using a Northwood.. as always, I’d love to hear other peoples overclocking stories..

Following Civilunrest’s lead, I’ve upgraded my version of WordPress.

According to WordPress.org, the vulnerabilities in previous versions of wordpress involve cross site scripting (XSS)

The newest version of WordPress also disables embedding/executing javascript code in a post. (but obviously you can use JavaScript in your templates).

Specific vulnerabilities exist in Wordpress 2.0.1 and lower
These prompted the release of wp 2.0.2, if you are using an older version it is a good idea to upgrade.

Suggestion: I recommend that people REFRAIN FROM showing the version of WordPress they are using in their site - e.g. at the bottom, DONT link to “Powered by WordPress x.xx.x” Just link to “Powered by WordPress”.

Reason: If a vulnerability is detected in your particular version of WordPress, hackers could easily discover your site by googling for “Powered by WordPress: specific.version.no”

Continuing the discussion on free ideas, I’d like to see the following (perhaps they already exist..)

A chat bridge - something that can transparently bridge between Yahoo, MSN, Google, and all the other chat softwares….

Such that person A can use Yahoo, person B can use MSN.. and so on… The bridge would be a web site of some sort which can transparently translate between protocols and create virtual screen names which are cross platform compatible…

so for example… Person A has yahoo, person B has AIM. Web site will create a virtual Yahoo person B (for person A to chat with) and vice versa for person A, and this virtual person could be added to their chat software and talked with….

The key is the process would be transparent … a sort of bridge/proxy.

So, if I have only msn, when I sign on to MSN, this web site would make an open source me online and anyone with any chat software could talk to me…

Tip: if you are sick of having MSN, Yahoo and so on, try downloading Gaim which will allow you to login with multiple yahoo/MSN/other ID’s

A common comment standard - so anyone can comment on anyones blog, without bothering about boring login/etc. Think gravatar… hmm.. how about gravarant?… so you login once, and that login is good enough to comment on ANY blog

I hate MSN powered blogs as they expect people to have a microsoft passport login to comment…

A better search engine

Google is good, but not perfect. I want a search engine that’s better. As such it should include..

  1. Equal or better coverage (than google/yahoo)
  2. Less dependency on pagerank, or other weasely technologoies.
  3. Less spam/gameability.
  4. Owned by an independent company (not google).

Evil Fire Fox
Fox with a lotta teeth.. by Freddy Kruger

From the “Tired of firefox fanboys” dept

Firefox, is an OK browser. It’s not the greatest thing since sliced bread, contrary to what most fanboys say. Heck, some people even say firefox sucks (OMG OMG! Stop Press. Hunt em down!)

Anyway, here are some reasons I personally don’t use firefox.

  1. It is somewhat slow when loading some web sites.
  2. Like Google, Apple and Wikipedia, Firefox has a rabid cult following of fans. I’m suspicious of anything which has so many fanboys.
  3. Some fanboys are obsessive enough to block users who access their websites using IE. Or give annoying little popups begging/threatening/coaxing you to switch to firefox. I think its OK to ask someone to switch to an open source browser, but to specifically ask people to switch to firefox before using your site.. thats plain creepy.
  4. It is fussy and messes up some web pages which IE renders OK.
  5. Alternative browsers (IMO) exist. e.g. Opera. To all fanboys: Give people a choice of alternates, don’t just ram firefox down their throats…

This could become the future of P2P.

The basic idea goes something like this: Wireless P2P.

Using WIFI, (or even bluetooth?) to ‘push’ music (possibly based on your existing preferences?)

This will give the RIAA nightmares..
